They looked almost human.
That was it. Almost. She caught glimpses of their faces and bodies as she approached. They had all the features of humans, but there was something terribly off about the cant and form of their downturned faces, the shadows beneath their eyes and the tear-tracks so deep that they had carved canyons down the creatures' cheeks. Their mouths were too wide, their eyes too small. All wrong.
